Happy Feast of the Chair of St. Peter!

The Chair resides within Bernini’s bronze casing at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome

A happy and most glorious feast of the Chair of St. Peter! Today’s celebration used to be two separate feasts: one commemorating St. Peter’s Chair at Rome on January 18th, and one commemorating his Chair at Antioch on this day. The two were combined and are now celebrated as one feast today, though January 18th still marks the beginning of the Church Unity Octave (see our post on that here).

Today is a particularly joyful feast for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, which is under the patronage of the Prince of the Apostles, and we celebrate it as a first class feast. Members of the FSSP (priests, deacons and seminarians) and also the Confraternity of St. Peter (see more information about the Confraternity here) are granted a plenary indulgence today under the usual conditions.

Deus, qui beáto Petro Apóstolo tuo, collátis clávibus regni cœléstis, ligándi atque solvéndi pontifícium tradidísti: concéde: ut, intercessiónis ejus auxílio, a peccatórum nostrórum néxibus liberémur.

O God, Who by delivering to Thy blessed Apostle Peter the keys of the kingdom of Heaven, didst confer upon him the pontifical power of binding and of loosing, grant that, by the help of his intercession, we may be freed from the bonds of sin.
